If my physician told me that I had a "growth", I would not be pleased. In fact, I would be very concerned. Point being that, once a system has reached optimum size, any further growth is not good for that system whether it be an organism like me or a population center like the Monterey Peninsula and environs. Growth beyond those optimum sizes is at best, obesity and at worst, cancer.

So, what limits growth? There is a principle of ecology that states something like, "Whatever resource is in shortest supply will limit the growth of the system in which that resource is an important element." The resource that is in shortest supply here in Monterey and the surrounding municipalities appears to be water. More water will equal more growth until something else becomes limiting.

In the coming election for the water board there seems to be a coice between those candidates who favor policies leading to more growth and those who support positions leading to slow growth or no growth at all. My vote will go to the latter. I urge you to vote for Robert Pacelli in Pacific Grove, Kristi Markey in Monterey, and Zan Henson in Carmel Valley.
