<This letter was originally addressed to the Editor, Monterey County Herald> Thank you for Sunday's story exposing Pebble Beach Co.'s planned water profiteering. Please let me add a few fascinating points. The water district can confirm Pebble Beach has never paid a dime for the water "entitlement." They only "co-signed" for it--just like a parent does when a teenager buys a car. Every single penny they put in has been paid back in full. It is my opinion the water district never had any legal authority or water rights to sell or give to Pebble Beach Co. Now guess who dreamed up and wrote the contracts for the imaginary paper-water? Pebble Beach Co., of course. Is the company worried the new water board may take another look at the original bogus contract which gave a private for-profit company a massive gift of public water? Water which Pebble Beach now wants to convert into money? Each of our water bills is now immediately and irreversibly increased because we are over pumping the Carmel river for real drinking water. Ever wonder what caused that? -- David Dilworth |
