by Dee Ann White Jasper is a handsome Navajo-Churro ram originally from Connie Taylor's program. He was sold to Sarah Natani as a youngster and then loaned to her sister at Two Grey Hills. This was one time when "open mouth-insert foot" came out tasting like honey. Sarah and her sister were visiting about what to do with him and I blurted out that he could come live with me for the winter. Much to my surprise they agreed and he came to Oklahoma with me. I already had three adult Churro ewes, two ewe lambs and two ram lams but six of the seven were closely related. They were also already bred to my Ramboulet/Romney cross ram. I purchased two ewes from Sarah's daughter who I believe to be bred to her ram from the Utah program as Jasper has ignored them from the first. I also purchased three ewes from Connie Taylor and he was very pleased to meet them! Two weeks after we all got home from New Mexico I finally got to pick up the Ramboilet ewe I purchased at the National Colored Wool show in Tulsa and he thought she was pretty even if a bit different. Claudia and Gloria have three Churro ewes and not having a Churro ram of serviceable age they brought them over to visit with Jasper. He now has seven women in his harem and the two bred ewes! Jasper is not a young ram but seems to think he is young. Maybe there is something to what older men see in younger women? I will keep you updated on Jasper's harem next spring when the lambs start hitting the ground. Here's hoping for some beautiful daughters and a strong healthy son to carry on the program with my other unrelated ewes as he has to go back to New Mexico next fall when I go the Sarah's for the weaving workshop. |
